Research Process

Phase 1

Market Collection

At the beginning of each week, Front List Intel surveys more than 800 newly released titles across multiple publishing categories—from Biography & Memoir to Science Fiction & Fantasy—to establish the initial universe for analysis.

Phase 2

Objective Screening

The initial universe undergoes a consistent, rules-based screening process designed to remove obvious non-candidates. This process narrows the field to titles that may represent meaningful publishing opportunities.

Phase 3

Editorial Review

The remaining candidates undergo a publishing-focused editorial review designed to identify authors and titles that align with Front List Intel's scope and mission. This stage considers an author's commercial profile, body of work, market relevance, and potential publishing opportunity. Particular attention is given to self-published authors and independently published titles demonstrating meaningful market activity where publishing opportunity may exist. The objective is to focus additional research on the most promising candidates while significantly reducing the candidate pool and keeping the focus on emerging opportunity rather than popularity alone.

Phase 4

Metadata Collection

The remaining candidates undergo a deeper level of research designed to build a more complete commercial profile for each title.

Additional metadata—including publication details, format availability, pricing, reader engagement, and other market indicators—is collected to provide the context necessary for evaluating potential publishing opportunities.

Phase 5

Opportunity Assessment

The remaining candidates undergo a final evaluation to identify meaningful publishing opportunities.

This assessment considers the complete commercial profile developed during earlier phases and identifies signals that may be relevant to publishing professionals, including format opportunities, rights opportunities, publishing models, author potential, and other indicators of commercial opportunity.

By this stage, the initial universe has been reduced to a small number of titles demonstrating both meaningful market momentum and meaningful publishing opportunity.

Momentum Framework

Titles that appear on the Front List continue to be monitored each week using a proprietary momentum framework.

The Momentum Score is a proprietary 0–100 score that reflects three components: current Kindle Store Rank strength, week-over-week Kindle Store Rank movement, and week-over-week ratings growth.

The score is used to help classify titles as Active Momentum, Sustained Momentum, or Cooling and to track changes in commercial trajectory over time.

The Momentum Score is designed to compare titles within the Front List and should not be interpreted as an absolute measure of commercial success.

The exact methodology, weighting, and classification thresholds are proprietary and intentionally not published.

Long-Term Validation

Front List Intel measures its methodology over time by comparing previously identified titles against major bestseller lists and other market outcomes.

As the historical dataset grows, those comparisons help validate whether titles showing both market momentum and publishing opportunity were identified before broader commercial recognition.
